Muharram and its sanctity

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic Calendar or the lunar calendar. Muharram is a month that is dedicated to observing peace in the Muslim community or rather the entire humanity irrespective of creed, colour, cast and race.
The present conflict between the Sunnis, Shias, Ahmedis and different sects that have emerged over the years is very sad indeed. In the Quran, Allah clearly states,
“Verily your actions are judged by your intentions.”
It means that each act that we commit is measured by the intensity of its intent. Religion is a secular matter. It is a personal matter between God and his follower. Be it Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism or different sects of Islam, the unnecessary killing of a human is not justified at any cost.
Islam is a religion that promotes peace. Today the killing of minorities such as shias and ahmadis is considered as purifying the Islamic race of non-believers’, according to some extreme elements. However, Islam is a religion that stands for the rights of minorities and religious tolerance.
The extremist factions have distorted Islam and its true meaning. Killing innocent people in the name of shahadah as a means to eradicate the so called ‘non- believers’ (pun intended) is a sin against sinning.
The sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain and his son Hazrat Ali is by no means a Shiite belief alone. It is a belief held by all Muslims. Muslims all over the world commemorate the day to honour the sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain. It is essential to show respect towards this enormous sacrifice.
Muharram marks the month of Islamic calendar in which the entire Muslim community expresses solidarity with each other to stop the insurgencies being carried out by militants and observe peace. The recent attack on the Wagah border during the month of Muharram is a heinous crime. It is indeed despicable. However, instead of breeding fear in the Pakistani community, it intensified their spirits and they bravely returned to the Wagah border to answer the perpetrators of crime.
For all the Muslim bretheren who were killed in the attack we must recite ‘Allah o Akbar’ ad kalma shahada for the peace of their souls and their relatives in distress.
Mike Ghouse says a small prayer written up for everyone. If your spirit feels in tune with it, please say ‘Amen’ after each line of the prayer.
Dear God, guide us to seek new beginnings for humanity where no one has live in anxieties, discomfort or fear of the other.
Let this Muharram pave the way for peace and justice for one and all.
I pray that the Shahadat of Imam Hussain become the catalyst for us to remove our differences and come together for peace, security and prosperity of Muslims and every human being.
